Water
Water is a symbol of feminine power. Nsuuta tells Kirabo stories about ancient woman's link to the sea. Kirabo, Giibwa, Alikisa, and Nsuuta all bathe naked in the rain. When Kirabo finds out about Sio's affair with Giibwa, she throws buckets of water on him.
Land
Land is a symbol of masculinity. While women are considered tempestuous, men are supposed to be solid and sturdy. In Uganda during Kirabo's childhood, only men are allowed to own land and women are at the mercy of their husbands, fathers, and children. In the end, Kirabo inherits land from her father and grandfather, giving her the security and independence of a man.

The buffalo is a symbol of feminine rage. When Kirabo experiences her grandmother's wrath, she dreams of a murderous buffalo.
