Summary

In “Chapter 5,” Kirabo and the other “Third World Schools” (244) girls improved their grades and made it out of the lowest class, while many of the top performing girls started under-performing. Kirabo put up posters everywhere asking if anyone knew her mother. During the Christmas break of 1978, after she had finished her second year, Kirabo went home to Aunt Abi’s house. Her father arrived and gave them the news that Kabuye, Sio’s father, had been taken by the military because his wife was Tanzanian and a war had broken out. His wife escaped the country, but Sio was home alone. Kirabo took the bus into the country without telling anyone. She went to Sio’s house and found him there with his aunt. She and Sio talked all day and had a wonderful reunion. Sio’s aunt let Kirabo sleep in...
