Summary

In Chapter 9, “blood in mud”, Doireann is fixated on the idea of visiting Eibhlín Dubh’s marital home, Raleigh House. She addresses a letter to the home in hopes that the current residents would be affable to her request. In the years following Eibhlín’s marriage to Art, she had two sons. In 1771, when the poet was pregnant again, Art returned to Raleigh House. Art had many enemies, amongst them was Abraham Morris. Morris was the sheriff of Cork and a strict enforcer of the Penal Laws. The lawman put a price on Art’s life after he refused to sell the sheriff a horse. Shortly after leaving Raleigh House, Art was shot by a posse led by Morris. His horse galloped back to Raleigh House and Eibhlín mounted the stead who carried her...
