Summary

Part 9, Chapter 1 begins with the next morning. Lila is sore and in pain from the previous day. Emery, meanwhile, is cheerful, telling Lila she missed a wonderful ball the previous evening. Emery reveals he must face down Jinnar in a match, while Lila is slated to go up against Ver-as-Is. Breakfast helps Lila regain some of her strength. Emery asks what it was Lila was running from the night she joined his crew. Lila rhetorically asks who it was who said she was running. Emery becomes cold, wondering if he has become a burden which is why Lila was so anxious to take Elsor’s spot. Emery and Jinnar soon have their match. Emery wins, and Jinnar takes the loss in stride.
