Summary
In Part 1, Chapter 1, Delilah “Lilah” Bard, watches her stolen ship, Golden Fish, leave across the Arnesian Sea without her. The small skiff she now uses is rapidly sinking. Lila sends up distress flares, including the red pirate signal flare. The Arnesian pirate ship The Copper Thief, responds. The captain of the ship, Baliz Kasnov, invites her on board the Thief. Lila explains she is from London, that her husband and most of her crew have been killed, and that her ship has been stolen. Baliz tells his crew they will track down the Fish. Lila also watches as one of the crew members mouths words like “Londoner” and “ransom.". Lila’s wrists are tied, and she is placed in Baliz’s cabin. Alone, Lila frees herself. With a pluming taper emitting a drugged smoke, she overcomes two guards
