Point of View

The novel is narrated in first-person present by the main character, Chloe. However, Chloe frequently slips into past tense as she remembers the crimes in Breaux Bridge and her life before her father revealed himself to be a monster. Chloe is traumatized by the horrible events of her childhood, in which she discovered evidence that implicated her kind and beloved father in the murder of six teenage girls. Chloe had to turn the evidence over to the police, and then she watched as her father was arrested and put on trial in front of the whole world.

Although Chloe moves away from Breaux Bridge, she never quite leaves the past behind, which becomes apparent when examining her perspective. In order to cope with her grief and trauma, she abuses prescription pills and alcohol so badly that her clarity of thought is compromised, and her narrative...
