Summary

The novel is narrated by the protagonist, Chloe in first-person present. In the prologue, Chloe reflects on her childhood. She says she was always afraid of monsters, but, when she turned 12, she started being afraid of one in particular—her father.

Chapter One is set in May of 2019. Chloe is now a therapist who works with troubled teen girls. She has a session with a teenager named Lacey who has been cutting herself because she is dealing with the emotional stress of her parents’ divorce. Chloe spends the session worrying about a tickle in her throat that she fears might turn into a cold.

In Chapter Two, Chloe finishes filing her session with Lacey and then calls in a prescription for Prozac for Lacey. She also calls in a prescription of Xanax for herself by using the name of her fiancé, Daniel...
