As the memoir opens, Santat lives in Camarillo, CA. Everything he knows happens in this town because he and his parents cannot travel much due to his mom having lupus. As the memoir opens, Santat sees no need to leave Camarillo, and yet he has very little hope that his life will get better now that he is graduating from junior high.

Los Altos Middle School

Santat is about to graduate from Los Altos Middle School as the memoir opens. He has not had an easy time in middle school since other students pick on him frequently. It is in this school that he has to recite an A.A. Milne poem to a heckling crowd, and it is also here that he rescues Shelley from embarrassment when she has a menstrual leak.
