Summary
Chapter 1. October 24, 1940. Nate and his girlfriend, Miriam, go to L’Omelette, a local restaurant in Palo Alto. The restaurant is empty, but the bar is crowded in the aftermath of a Stanford football game. Nate pushes his way through the crowd to get a bottle of wine for him and Miriam. When he returns, Nate finds Miriam sitting with a young man who introduces himself as Jack Kennedy.
Chapter 2. Miriam tells Nate that Jack is auditing classes at the Stanford School of Business. Nate is aware of who jack is because his father is ambassador to England and he has recently written a book called Why England Slept. Jack invites Nate to attend a class on contemporary world politics with him. Nate agrees. Jack leaves with a young tennis player. Later, Nate takes Miriam home, but she will not allow him...
