Summary
Chapter 1. October 24, 1962. Palo Alto, California. Nathan Michaels, Nate, receives a phone call from Robert Kennedy, the attorney general. Kennedy wants Nate to travel to the United States to help with a problem. Nate refuses at first, but Kennedy reminds him that he once served his country and must continue. Nate travels to Washington via a military plane.
Chapter 2. Nate arrives at the White House late in the evening. The President, Jack Kennedy, greets Nate warmly despite Nate’s cool reception. Jack seems surprised that Nate is still angry at him for a falling out they had twenty years ago. Jack mentions Nate’s service during the war and uses it as a reason why Nate should want to help him now. Jack then tells Nate that the Russians have begun stockpiling nuclear warheads in Cuba.
