In this section, Lottie May is wandering the streets, unable to remember that she is supposed to be going to Big Joe's. She is now deathly afraid of white people, and of the snakes she sees them working with. She consistently sees a snake with the head of a white man with blue eyes, and is only surprised the white people are not worshiping the snakes. She repeats to herself that she is ready, and knows what she must do. She realizes she is wandering among the whites, and wonders why when she sees the flashing of blue police lights.
