Summary
In Chapter 37, Gamache drove to a restaurant in Williamsburg, identified himself, and said he needed help for three women stuck on the ice. Gamache rode a snowmobile piloted by Billy Williams. They found the women, who were buried in snow and dug them out. The other men followed Billy. They had driven so long that Gamache thought they were lost when they finally pulled up onto the shore near the hospital.
Later, Beauvoir asked Gamache how he had known the women's intentions. Gamache showed him the letter. As they sat down to talk, Gamache said it was CC’s boots that had given the women away. Em had not realized the significance of the boots with the metal spikes. A doctor approached them and told them that Kaye and Mother Bea were going to survive; Em, however, was dead.
