Chapter 16: Clara—Ellis Island, September 1911

After their shift was over, Clara and Dolly returned to their room. Dolly helped Clara get ready for her date with Dr. Randall by offering styling and wardrobe assistance. Dolly paid her lots of complements, especially about her hair. Dolly, hoping to encourage Clara to embrace the possibility to move on from Edward, told her "You're in love with a dream, Clara. Sooner or later you're going to wake up from it and you'll be glad I didn't coddle you while you slept" (152). Clara did not appreciate Dolly's meddling, but Dolly was only trying to help Clara move on from the fire and move on from Ellis Island.
