El grows up alone with her mother, who is a famous healer known for benevolence and kindness. They live in a yurt in Wales. El's father was killed during the graduation ceremony by a maw-mouth, which he sacrificed himself to in order to save El and her pregnant mother. When El was a small child, her mother took her to see her paternal grandparents for the first time. They were thrilled to meet the child of their late son, but as soon as El’s grandmother set eyes on her, she was horrified. She cursed El and gave a prophecy about the destruction El would unleash upon the world.
