Part 3, Chapter 1 Summary
In September 1890, Joseph Pilaster dies and leaves the bulk of his wealth to his son Edward. Hugh is thirty-seven at the time and is becoming wealthy as a partner. He and Nora now have three sons, Tobias, Samuel and Solomon, and he is paying Bertie's tuition at Windfield. His sister Dottie is engaged to Nick Ipswich from the bankrupt dukedom of Norwich.
Before leaving for Joseph's funeral, Hugh holds a family meeting to discuss Dottie's engagement and what he will provide her as a dowry. Then they all leave for the funeral ceremony where Hugh sits next to Samuel. He is thinking about who will be made senior partner.
