Part 2, Chapter 1 Summary

Hugh is gone for six years and successfully helps the Pilaster wealth double while he is in Boston. He returns to London with a plan for merging the Pilaster U.S. operations with Madler and Bell. He meets with the partners to discuss his proposal. He wants to be a partner to deal with Madler and Bell from London.

Hugh attends the gathering in Augusta's drawing room. Everyone is eager to see Hugh, who learns that Micky is now Cordovan Minister. A note arrives telling Hugh that Solly and his wife want Hugh to come for dinner, an invitation which Hugh accepts. He is told by the others that Solly and his wife are high society in London. When he arrives there, he finds that Mrs. Greenbourne is Maisie.

Augusta is now beginning her campaign to obtain a title for herself...
