Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary
August 1 is the day of races at Goodwood and is attended by all classes of British society, including Solly, Maisie, Tonio and April. Maisie takes a walk once the races begin and sees Hugh Pilaster being victimized by a pickpocket, nabs the thief, and retrieves Hugh's pocket watch. She returns it to Hugh and they talk over a beer. She explains why children steal and he explains how they were both victims of the same event with the financial crisis in 1866. They agree to meet that night for dinner.
Maisie returns to Solly, thinking of how she is going to have to cut their evening short. Micky Miranda and Edward join them. Carlos and a younger woman are also there. Micky invites Solly and Tonio to a card game that evening and they accept. Solly walks around with Maisie and asks...
