Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary
Hugh first visited the bank with his grandfather as a child and he is now the general assistant to the Principal Clerk. Sir John Cammel, the father of his Windfield classmate, arrives and Hugh asks for Albert's address so he can write him. He handles the deposit and mentions that Russian bonds would pay a higher rate of interest. Later his Uncle Samuel tells him that Cammel bought the bonds. Hugh tells his uncle that he wants to become his correspondence clerk when the present one retires.
Maisie and April share a room in a Soho slum. They live off the men who buy them meals and pay their rent. Maisie tells April her background and how she came to be in London. April wants her to pursue the relationship with Solly. She stops to pet a horse and the owner...
