Monterey, 1852
The entirety of the novel takes place in Monterey, California, in 1852 (and the beginning of 1853). The geographical setting is important because this part of California is still, at this point, not totally settled yet, lacking police and other things. Many of the characters (including Eliza) came there initially in search of gold, but it seems like there isn't much left to be found by the time the events of the novel start taking place. All the same, it's mostly a peaceful town, certainly more peaceful than the bigger, more "mainstream" places around it. That does not shield it completely from crime -- the string of murders that takes place there is the main thrust of the novel.
