Summary
Chapter 19 begins with Eliza and Jean walking along. They talk about slavery in light of Jean’s family background (182). The next day, she sees the lawyer and follows him for a bit before he starts to make his way to Mrs. Parks’ – Eliza heads there too (183). Eliza fakes illness and he leaves. The next day, she meets him on the street, and he invites her on an “‘outing’” the next day (185), which she accepts. Jean plans to be there dressed as a man to observe. Caleb, a sailor Eliza knows, is her customer that night at Mrs. Parks’. The next morning, Eliza and Jean meet at the Bear and plan for Eliza’s trip with the lawyer.
