Summary
Eliza arrives at Mrs. Parks’ place at the beginning of chapter 15 and asks her about the girl whose body she suspects she found – Mary (147). Mrs. Parks herself suspects she may have been murdered and has apparently gone “‘to the sheriff…four times’” regarding her (148). Mrs. Parks then tells Eliza that, apparently, Mr. Marvin confessed to killing his wife (149). Eliza tells Mrs. Parks straight-out that she found Mary’s body, and Mrs. Parks says she will go tell the sheriff. Shortly thereafter, Lucas returns to Eliza. They go out to eat, and Lucas talks about tensions between slave states and non-slave states, guessing “‘that there’s going to be a war’” (152). Eliza and Lucas share a night together. The next night, the man who “looked [Eliza] up and down in a judgmental way” at the restaurant chapters ago shows up as one of her...
