Summary
Eliza returns to the restaurant (The Bear) that she visited with Lucas when the bar fight took place at the beginning of chapter 10 (96), and finds Lucas there. Eliza begins to tell Lucas the story of her and Peter’s travel from Michigan to Monterey. Lucas then tells about his travels, witnessing a slave auction along the way (101). After the meal, they go back down to the bay where they went after their first meal together. Eliza decides “that she ha[s] never seen such a man before” (103), falling more for Lucas. Eliza succeeds in leading Lucas toward the house where she found the piece of twine earlier. The man with “the pointed nose…and the limp” from the altercation Eliza witnessed earlier comes out of the house, and he recognizes Lucas (104). They talk to the man, whose name is Zeke, and go walk...
