Summary

At the start of chapter 5, Eliza returns to Mrs. Parks’ and learns that Mrs. Parks will have Jacob banned from the establishment for his behavior (46). Jean meets her and says she hears Munras’s ghost “tromping around” at the land he owned (47). They go into town, up to Munras’s territory, then to the graveyard down the street where Peter happens to be buried (49). They continue to walk around the graveyard. Jean says there are “’no ghosts,’” but “’something’” that makes her “’very uneasy’” (53). They walk back to town together, but as soon as Jean drops Eliza off, she “hurried back to Casa Munras, then to the cemetery” (54). She finds two pairs of footprints in the graveyard (56).

Chapter 6 begins with Eliza thinking of the “two tasks” that her and Jean have to complete that Monday morning — to “ride to…the girl’s remains...
