Summary
In Chapter 3, Lara takes the bus “to Riverside County’s free clinic” (57). Because she cannot remember “ever being inside a doctor’s office,” she wants to get her vaccinations (57). Although the clinic employee does not want to vaccinate her because she is a minor, she takes pity on Lara. She schedules an appointment and tells Lara to come back another day.
Lara waits “over an hour” for the bus (60). While driving past, the woman from the clinic notices her and offers her a ride. She introduces herself as Leticia. Before dropping Lara off, she gives her advice on her hair and loans her two dollars to buy a bonnet.
When Lara’s money goes missing, she knows Yevgenia stole it. She remembers the time an old man paid her to perform fellatio. She gave the cash to Yevgenia.
