Summary
Jesse next hears the story of the Shirley Temple doll like the one that ultimately gets passed on to Lillian. Mae likes being around Lillian’s family, but she knows she has to be careful around Blanche. When she is buried with the dying girl, she starts to get feelings that Lillian will encounter violence, and since Lillian is really the girl she is supposed to be with, she goes back to her. Mae explains that she can really only influence Lillian. On the day Blanche dies, she cannot save Blanche. All she can do is distract Lillian away from what is happening.
All of the talk with the dolls has reunited Jesse with Ethel, and she feels like she is wading and then swimming in water, her creativity flowing. Ethel tells her that she always felt...
