Summary

As a child, Cora has a doll named Winona. Winona is older than Cora, and sometimes the doll lulls her to sleep. One day she hears riders coming to tell them that Sitting Bull was arrested by Indian Police and may be dead. Saswe, Cora’s father, insists saying that Cora “is wise. She’ll remember” and should go with to see what is happening (135). Winona is old enough to remember the Whitestone Hill massacre.

When they get to town, people move to the side to let Saswe through because he is an interpreter. There Cora sees a pile of dead bodies and smells whiskey which the Indian police drank to give them courage to carry out the arrest. Sitting Bull’s body is unrecognizable.
