Summary
In the final chapter, a messenger arrives at the comedy club, addressing Lemuel as Commander Pitkin. He informs Lemuel the Leather Shirts are about to capture the city of New York. Lemuel offers his limited abilities of assistance. He asks him to make a speech after Mr. Whipple takes over City Hall. He gives Lemuel a script to read. Later on, Lemuel goes on stage to make his speech and gets one sentence in before an assassin shoots him dead on stage.
West goes on to describe one final scene. In the future, Lemuel’s birthday is a national holiday with a parade of young boys singing the Lemuel Pitkin song in a march down Fifth Avenue. The song describes Lemuel as a hero and martyr for the National Revolutionary Party. Lemuel’s mother, a little old lady, cries on the sidelines. Betty Prail...
