Summary
The prosecuting attorney, Mr. Barnes visits Lemuel and urges him to accept a guilty plea for only thirty days in a workhouse. Lemuel protests that his innocence should require his freedom. Mr. Barnes warns him that without money he will not possibly win his case, and that he is preparing for re-election and will go harder on him if he makes him take time away preparing a case. Lemuel accepts the plea. Upon release he goes immediately to the bank only to find the Jewish lawyer he denied as his counsel took his money without his permission. Without funds for a new eye and teeth, Lemuel's job prospects appear devastating. Standing on the steps of the bank, Betty taps him on the shoulder. Betty is still dressed like a prostitute.
