Summary
In Chapter 9, Lemuel takes his instructions from his new employer to his hotel and reads them. The instructions are a script structuring his entrance into a jewelry store and a conversation where he pretends to lose his fake eye, and leave with the promise that Lemuel will return the next day with a large reward for anyone who can find his eye. He must then report to Mr. Hainey’s secretary and tell him if there was any deviation from the script.
In Chapter 10, Lemuel realizes he enjoys his new job after recovering from his initial embarrassment. He has the opportunity to practice his childhood love of theater while enjoying unprecedented leisure time. He attempts unsuccessfully to find Mr. Whipple and makes a new friend at his lodgings.
