Summary

Lemuel protests his innocence to the police officers. The sergeant asks him if he will go quietly and clubs him on the head before he can respond. Lemuel wakes in a cell surrounded by detectives. As soon as he opens one eye, they order him to confess and kicked in the stomach. The detectives tell him he stole a diamond ring and sold it. Lemuel explains it was left in his pocket when the thief stole his money, and he sold it for thirty dollars.
