Summary
Lemuel wakes up in the bushes and without spotting Betty passed out on the other side of the road, believes her to be safe and recovers his optimism. He returns home and does not tell his mother about his encounter with Baxter in order not to worry her. She signs Mr. Whipple's loan for thirty dollars, using her cow as collateral, and Lemuel buys a ticket to New York. On the train, Lemuel meets an over-dressed stranger who tells him he is the nephew of the Mayor of New York. Lemuel is impressed, especially when the stranger tells him his father left him “a cool million” and he has never had to work (20). He tells Lemuel to be careful of thieves in New York and asks him if he keeps his money safely hidden. Lemuel tells him he keeps it in a secret...
