Summary
Sylvie works hard selling illegal books to the Protestant Huguenots who have arrived in France to see the royal wedding. She was visiting people three times a day, as opposed to three times a week, and worries about being caught. However, her time with Ned is reassuring, and her mother shares their full names with him after his third visit to their shop. On this particular night, Ned infroms them that one of Coligny’s main generals ignored orders and was captured. However, Sylvie’s mom is more interested in him, asking about his wealth and social status back in Kingsbridge. Eventually, she leaves to set up shop while Sylvie and Ned talk to each other alone. Sylvie reveals that her last suitor was Pierre himself who pretended to be Protestant to betray her congregation. Ned tells her about his illegitimate...
