Summary
Alison and Mary are locked up in Lock Leven after Mary made many questionable decisions. Now, the two of them are attempting to escape. By 1568, Mary has made three crucial mistakes. First, she had fallen in love with and married Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Lord Henry Darnley who Alison despised. However, when Mary became pregnant, Darnley killed Mary’s secretary, believing that man was the father. Mary’s second mistake was encouraging the violent earl of Bothwell to kill Darnley. Neither anticipated that the Scots would revolt against this royal immorality. After Bothwell kidnaps Mary and Alison, her country refuses to protect her, especially after Bothwell’s wife divorces him. Mary’s third mistake, albeit against her will, was marrying Bothwell.
