Summary

Knowing she is committing a crime, Margery sweeps the floor of a chapel in preparation for Mass. The small village of Tench has no church. Instead, they use a chapel in Earl Swithin’s house. The building is in bad repair, but Margery cleans it up the best she can. A former priest named Stephen Lincoln lights some candles on an alter they had taken from Kingsbridge Cathedral. As the son rises, the villagers arrive, and Margery is happy to see that everyone who lives in Tench is there. Stephen begins mass in Latin and Margery lets herself relax. Margery has spent a lot of time traveling around Shiring county both with Bart and without. Many people liked her and were willing to talk about religion.
