Summary

Rollo is angry with Margery for continuing to refuse her parents' orders to marry Bart. He considers marrying Ned to be a betrayal, as Rollo and his family are the leading Catholics. As they head to Mass, Rollo admires how amazing they all look. His tall and imposing father Reginald, the mayor of Kingsbridge, is with his thin and perceptive wife Jane leading a charismatic Rollo and Margery who Rollo knows is the prettiest girl in town. Rollo’s great-aunt, a former nun named Sister Joan who insisted on listening to Bishop Julius, accompanies them. However, Rollo notices that his mother’s clothes are looking older, as Reginald does not have money for new clothes after the capture of Calais.
