Summary
As Paris rejoices over the successful siege on Calais, Pierre Aumande works to con the celebrators out of their money. He watches a gambler named Bertrand win many games of dice out of pure luck, and decides to move in. Pierre tells Bertrand that the latter likely had a woman he did not think liked him until she kissed him. Bertrand is surprised and Pierre tells him it is because the former is lucky. Pierre tells Bertrand that his grandfather’s cousin was lucky because his mother gave a beggar a penny while she was pregnant. Pierre asks about Bertrand’s mother, and the latter calls her a saint. Pierre wonders what his own mother would think of him cheating others out of their money, but believes he is doing the right thing. Bertrand tells Pierre that he almost drowned when a friar...
