Evie

Eve—nicknamed Evie—is the novel’s narrator and point-of-view character. She partially functions as an analog to the biblical figure of Eve. She is a teenager and has come to a vacation retreat with her parents. She spends her time with the teenage children of the other parents. Throughout the novel, she tries to take care of her younger brother Jack. She also attempts to cultivate feelings of gratitude in the face of adversity.

Jack

Jack is Evie’s younger brother. Early in the novel, one of the parents gives him an illustrated Bible for kids. He becomes very interested in it, and he notices parallels between Bible stories and the events that take place around him.
