Chapters 6 - 10 Summary
Chris telephones Elaine to tell her Arthur Wade has been lynched and tells her to turn on the television. The still photograph gives the appearance of a white male hanging onto Arthur's legs in an effort to break his neck. Only Arthur and the man hanging from his legs are in focus. Chris asks her to come in. It takes Kevin almost two hours to get home. He pours himself a glass of vodka, and showers, trying to dull the pain and remove the blood before calling the police. Mayor Conrad Aiken meets with Chris, Elaine, and Police Chief Dan Rigby and other officers at three o'clock in the morning, advocating that the police shoot any rioters who have been looting stores. The rest of the group call for a calmer approach, but Aiken is adamant. He asks Lieutenant Abe Glitsky...
