Dorothy Daniels
Dorothy Daniels is the first person narrator and main character of the novel. In the narrative present, Dorothy is interned at Bedford Hills women’s prison. After being found guilty of murder, assault, and arson, she was “sentenced to life, plus twenty years” (227). Having had a career as a journalist and food critic, Dorothy regards writing as a form of sustenance. Therefore, while in prison, she decides to pen her memoir as a way to keep herself alive. At the same time, this personal writing project is a way for Dorothy to amend the public’s impression of her, and to preserve her name, memory, and reputation.
