Summary

In Chapter 10, “Torta ai Fichi e Limone,” over the years, Emma became increasingly reclusive. After a panic attack, Emma got a job as “a phone sex operator” (122). Meanwhile, she worked on her art. Soon she established herself as “the greatest American Realism painter working today” (125).

Two weeks after losing her job, Dorothy “returned to work” on her book (125). She also sent pitches to magazines and tried monetizing her blog. Meanwhile, she continued dating Gil, “the ousted publisher of Eat & Drink” (127). In some ways, he reminded her of Marco.

In “late June 2009,” Dorothy and Gil “boarded his sailboat to sail across Gardiners Bay” (128). Dorothy brought food. The day was beautiful. All she had to do “was wait for Gil’s anaphylactic shock to kick in” before she could complete her plan (129).
