This section includes seven chapters: “Verdict,” “Sentence,” “Bad News,” “Mud Time,” “The Stay,” “Lethal,” and “Unclean.” “Verdict” is two pages long - as the judge announces that Luther has been found guilty of two counts of homicide in the first degree. Luther is surprised, though is convinced that God will not abandon him. “Sentence” is also two pages long where Luther receives the news that he is sentenced to death by lethal injection at a time to be determined. The judge tells him his actions were “cloaked in a distortion and perversion of Christian religious conviction” and that this judgement will show that no one is above the law, no matter their faith or ideology (383). “Bad News” is also two pages long - as Edna Mae receives the news of Luther’s sentence over the phone from Luther’s lawyer.
