The bloody eagle feather Ximena finds represents the blood shed on both sides during the Mexican American war. In Ximena’s eyes, it forebodes either Mexico’s pain or of America’s impending self-destruction.
Sullivan’s wooden shamrock
Sullivan’s wooden shamrock represents Riley’s paternal love for the boy as Riley decides to keep the carving as a token of their time together. As the shamrock is a traditional symbol of Ireland it also serves to remind Riley of his duty to his home country, family, and God, giving him the courage to break his oath to the Yankee army.
