Ximena Salomé

Ximena is one of the protagonists of the novel. When the novel begins, Ximena is married to Joaquin. She works as a curandera alongside her grandmother, Nana Hortencia. Ximena is a loyal wife and dotes on her husband. She has an empathetic, passionate nature.

Ximena had a difficult upbringing. Her mother and brothers died during a cholera epidemic while her father brought shame upon his family when he sided against the Mexicans during the Texas Revolt. Ximena’s one consolation was Nana Hortencia’s kinship. The two women both 2enjoy peace and quiet.

Ximena decides to become a field nurse in order to do her part for Mexico. The work is demanding and often overwhelming. Ximena makes friends with the San Patricios and becomes particularly close with Maloney and Riley. Maloney’s death pains her deeply.
