Summary
In Chapter 31, it is July. The Yankees succeeded in capturing Vera Cruz. Riley is now in Mexico City.
Riley and Dalton visit a prison to recruit captured Yankees for their battalion. On his way back to the barracks, Riley spots an old woman who resembles Nana Hortencia selling herbs. He thinks of Ximena and wonders where she is. Once home, Riley receives an anonymous note asking to meet him at the marketplace
Riley rushes to the marketplace and into Ximena’s arms. They kiss. Riley is stunned to hear of Ximena’s pregnancy. He is glad but worried that he will not be able to provide for them adequately.
Chapter 32 resumes in August. Riley hires a carriage to take him and Ximena around the city. Riley thinks of Nelly and hopes she is resting in peace. Back at their quarters, Ximena draws a...
