Summary

In Chapter 17, it is September. Riley is in Monterrey, stationed at a citadel. Many men died on the way there. General Arista was dismissed from the army.

As they work to set up cannons, Riley’s Irish friends discuss the citadel’s beauty. They look forward to bringing their families over. Riley composes a leaflet addressed to foreigners within the Yankee army.

Once they are done for the day, Riley and his men head back into town. Riley spots Maloney and Ximena exiting an apothecary. Ximena arrived a few days prior. Riley offers to accompany Ximena while she picks herbs. She consents.

As they ride side-by-side on horseback, Riley feels guilty for the pleasure he feels at Ximena’s nearness. Ximena notices Riley’s stomach grumble as they pick herbs. She decides to set up a small fire and cook him some prickly...
