Summary
In Chapter 5, it is April. Ximena dreams of a burning village. She has had the same nightmare every night since Joaquin left with Cortina. After dressing, Ximena picks herbs with Nana Hortencia. Ximena always got along better with Nana than with her own mother, who wanted her to marry rich. Ximena lost her mother and two brothers to a cholera epidemic in 1833. Ximena had nightmares before they died and years later before she had a miscarriage. Ximena believes her dreams to be visions from the future.
Ximena has war-related trauma. When she was younger, her family lived in San Antonio. Her father sided with the Texians over the Tejanos during the Texan Revolt. Unfortunately, this did not save them from being evicted from their home after the revolt. He died shortly after, heartbroken over being betrayed by the Texians.
