Summary
Tom implores Darcy to bypass the main door of the house to avoid her seeing the already demolished fireplace, the renovation he pretended to propose at the bar. Darcy flies into a rage. She is angry that her favorite part of the house is gone without having had a chance to prepare herself. Tom does not accept her angry response, telling her that “You lived here on and off for years. You could have lit it anytime” (289). He is angry that she seems to put him up on a pedestal, expecting him to be perfect. He also tells her that he is disappointed in himself for messing up his numbers on the project. Darcy replies that none of that matters to her because he is the only man she has ever wanted, and nobody compares to him.
