The entirety of 4000 Miles takes place in New York City. New York is the most populous city in the United States, proving to be quite a contrast for Leo's usual surroundings. He has spent the last month biking across the country, with half of that trip as a solo traveler. Leo has voiced his need for space and nature, so this shift in environment plays a major role in Leo’s overall comfort. In Scene 6 Amanda describes Leo as a “mountain man” (1.6.46). This observation demonstrates exactly how out of place Leo is in Manhattan.
