Importance: This quote sets the stage for Leo’s relationship with his mother. He and Jane are clearly estranged, though at this point in the story the audience is unaware of the reasoning. Additionally, Leo’s line is an excellent example of his approach to conflict. While he does not get angry easily, when faced with a difficult situation Leo often chooses to avoid discord rather than address these differences.
