Chapters 9-10 Summary
In chapter nine, Dr. McDill and his wife are in an office with Special Agent Chalmers, telling their story. Chalmers appears interested but skeptical about the story, in part because the McDills took so long to report the crime. However, when Margaret confesses the rape and Dr. McDill explains about the threats the kidnappers made, Chalmers begins to listen more closely. Chalmers promises to allow them to look at mug pictures in hopes of identifying the kidnappers and to notify his boss about the possibility that this could be happening again. However, McDill finds himself forced to encourage caution several times in fear that the FBI might tip off the kidnappers before the ransom has been paid, thereby endangering the child.
